Whilst your domain name should closely reflect your intentions, some sensible variations or combinations can be advantageous.

Some things to consider:

  1. If your business name consists of multiple words, should you remove the spaces between the words (thus joining it all together) or should you replace the spaces with hyphens ??
  2. Whilst you spell your domain name correctly, might your visitors misspell it ??
  3. Your competitor/s could register similar domain name/s to yours, in an effort to take some of your business.
  4. There are some 'profiteers' who deliberately register similar domain names.

Often you can register multiple domain names. Then it does not matter which way your visitor might type in the domain, they will still get to you.

And the same applies for considering different TLDs or country SLDs to register your domain within.

For example: an Australian business could consider all aspects and decide to register the following:

  • theirname.com.au
  • theirname.com
  • their-name.com.au
  • their-name.com
  • theirnmae.com (a typical misspelling)
  • theirnmae.com.au
  • their-nmae.com
  • their-nmae.com.au

Please remember, that here we are talking about the domain names and that, for the example above, that does NOT mean that 8 separate websites need to be maintained. This would often be handled by a single website.
