In recent years, there have been a multitude of new TLDs released, some with stringent registration requirements.
Around 2001, there were 7 new TLDs released (.aero, .biz, .coop, .info, .museum, .name, and .pro), with .xxx being released in 2011.
Subsequently, ICANN revealed on 13th June 2012, that there had been nearly 2,000 applications for new TLDs with some of these becoming live during 2013 and a constant stream being released almost monthly.
