Where the applicable country code authority has decided that domain name registrations must be under specified second-level domains (SLDs), then they will normally publish certain requirements that apply to those SLDs.

It is important to research these requirements BEFORE attempting to register a domain name, as the requirements may prevent a successful registration or you might be successful in registering the domain name, however the authority may investigate and cancel your registration (typically without any refund of charges).

As an example, to register a domain under .com.au (such as xyz.com.au) some of the requirements include that the:

  • Registrant is Australian;
  • Domain name matches the Registrant's name or Trademark;
  • Domain is for commercial purposes.
