Some of the typical requirements for a home/office LAN are:
- While data downloads will be more than uploads, there will be more balance (EG: exchanging data with other companies or clients, or off-site backups);
- A small limited number of people requiring access, typically with desktops and/or laptops, and these days, including smartphones and tablets;
- Typically includes wireless connectivity (rather than running cables throughout the home);
- A separate telephone number for the business.
In this scenario, your network would typically comprise of a wireless capable router connecting to your ISP and providing multiple LAN ports for your desktops/laptops. Additionally, VoIP would be included by either the router having VoIP capabilities or a separate VoIP adapter being added.
